Taking on Tallinn, Estonia

Taking on Tallinn, Estonia

While we can’t say that Estonia occupied a spot on our bucket list, we sure are glad that we checked it off anyway!

You've GOT to love a country that sang its way to freedom, serves food you didn't even know was edible and (in the past), used some freaky remedies to cure what ails ya... CONTINUE READING

A Dose of Dos Cancúns in Mexico

Just over forty years ago, there was nothing but jungle and sand along this isolated stretch of Caribbean shoreline.

You may equate Cancun with beaches, relaxation, and high-rise resorts -- and you'd be right -- but there is another side of Cancun that we discovered... CONTINUE READING >>

Why We Love a Good Christmas Market

We love Christmas markets!

The festivities, the food, the comraderie, the glühwein - put it all together and we've got ourselves a great way to ring in the season!

But really -- you ask -- how different can they be? Surely one Christmas market is the same as the next?

Our reply? Not by a loooooooong shot! ... CONTINUE READING >>

Shear Madness: Fall Festivals of the Catskills

When autumn arrives in the Catskills, there’s a good bet a party is happening nearby.

The explosion of color on the mountainsides brings in folks from far and wide, so putting on a festival is a natural thing to do.

Visit the site of the 1969 Woodstock Festival, a Sheep and Wool Festival and, because it's October, or shall we say Oktober... CONTINUE READING >>

Street Food Eating our Way Through Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula

Across Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, we set out to sample as many street delicacies as possible and got off to a jumping start at a weekend street fair in Cancun.

In the Yucatán, many of the favorite foods can be traced back to Mayan times. In addition to building incredible cities, the Maya people grew... CONTINUE READING >>

Rural Mardi Gras AND Our Australian TV Debut!

Don't get us wrong - we LOVE New Orleans.

But the thought of wading into a Big Easy Mardi Gras is something better left to young whippersnappers. We took the rural route and learned about the wonderful goings-on in Cajun Country - what they call the REAL Mardi Gras!

Courir de Mardi Gras
involves costumed men dancing on horseback, begging, and chicken chasing!

La Grande Boucherie des Cajuns A tradition older than Mardi Gras, is a communal hog butcher and meat fest.

Fais do-do
See what Cajuns do once the kids go to bed... CONTINUE READING >>

The Oz Museum: Behind The Yellow Brick Road

Yes Dorothy, we were in Kansas anymore, Wamego to be exact.

As the home of The Oz Museum, this little burg between Topeka and Manhattan has become quite a Mecca for fans of The Wizard of Oz.

We entered the main street storefront into a fairly typical gift shop, with a couple of exceptions. There was a tornado ... CONTINUE READING >>

Pumped for Pumpkin Fest

It's small town America at her best - The Sycamore Pumpkin Fest! This little town's population doubles each year - and rightly so - as they roll out the Halloween red carpet.

Join us as we attend the pumpkin weigh-in, get scared snotless while playing Zombie Miniature Golf, take in a great parade, and listen to spooky stories in a cemetery! And get awesome ideas for YOUR jack-o'-lantern at the humongous display on the courthouse lawn.

Oh - and watch what happens when Veronica enters the pie eating contest... CONTINUE READING >>

Burger Travel: The Hamburger Festival of Akron, Ohio

Nothing says all-American like a summer food festival in the Heartland, and hamburgers are as American as it gets.

GypsyNesting in Your Own Backyard

As much as we love our GypsyNester lifestyle, we understand that chucking it all and hitting the highway is not something everybody can do. Many of us have ties that can make it difficult — if not impossible — to pull that off. With that in mind, we like to periodically point out that there are plenty of great GypsyNesting opportunities right in your own backyard.

A plethora of possibilities are playing out nearby no matter where you call home. You just have to know where to look ... CONTINUE READING >>

Man o' Manatees

January is manatee mania month in Florida. There is no better time of year to see- and swim with (yes!) -  these gentle giants in The Sunshine State, and Floridians go all out to show off the endangered sea cows, including throwing a festival or two.

Did someone say festival? No way we would miss that!

During the winter the... CONTINUE READING >>

Finding Germany in the Mountains of Georgia

The unexpected surprises that lurk around the next corner are one of the things that can make travel so interesting.

Boy, did we get one of those in the mountains of northern Georgia when we came upon the old fashioned Bavarian village of Helen.

Tucked into a valley on the banks of The Chattahoochee River, we suddenly found ourselves driving through an anachronism of epic proportions. Every building, down to the gas station... CONTINUE READING >>

Dynamic Districts of Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires, like most large urban areas, is actually a collection of varied communities, and as we explored many of them we found each offered unique backgrounds and qualities.

Cowboyin' Up in Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires is a city fueled by meat, and Mataderos is the barrio, or neighborhood, that traditionally supplied that fuel.

To celebrate that tradition and preserve many of the customs of the gauchos, who we would call cowboys, a huge event known as the Feria de Mataderos is held.

Thousands of people come from miles around to enjoy the food, music, crafts, and particularly the feats of skill demonstrated by the gauchos... CONTINUE READING >>

Navel Gazing in Cusco, Peru

Dubbed the Navel of the World, Cusco is an amazing blend of the very-old and the not-as-old.

Join your GypsyNesters as we see the sights (and sights) - see ancient ruins, a street festival with an ornery llama, crossing guards that threaten you with whips  and the weirdest rendition of The Last Supper you'll ever experience.

At over 11,000 feet above sea level, flying in takes steely reserve and handling the altitude takes native remedies... CONTINUE READING >>

Getting Key-ed Up in Florida

One of the greatest drives in America has to be the trip down U.S. Highway 1 through the Florida Keys.
