No, We Won't Buy You a... and an Underground, Secret River in Mexico

Our main goal as parents was to end up with happy, healthy, self-sufficient adults.
We can't tell anyone how to do this -- everyone's different and Lord knows we made our share of mistakes along the way -- but we can offer an insight that we've gained through our own offspring's transitions from childhood to adulthood.

Don't give kids everything they want, just everything they need.

A whole lot of what they want is stupid crap and... CONTINUE READING >>

Floating Down a Secret River in Mexico

So... a guy was chasing an iguana, and discovered this...

The Yucatan Peninsula is hiding miles and miles of secret rivers.

This was revealed to us just outside the Riviera Maya town of Playa del Carmen, Mexico when we descended beneath the surface and into Rio Secreto.

By into, we really mean in to... CONTINUE READING >>

The "Cottages" of Newport, Rhode Island

It was called the Gilded Age, a time when robber barons built excessive tributes to their self-proclaimed awesomeness.

Newport was the epitome of this unbelievable excess, aptly dubbed Conspicuous Consumption.

In an effort to one-up each other with their “summer cottages” iconic American families of railroad, mining and steel fortunes, threw lavish parties for their pets, had notorious... CONTINUE READING >>

T-Rex and the City

How I shared my first inappropriate adult-to-adult laugh with my daughter. Not exactly a Hallmark moment - but I'll take it.

There's passion on Manhattan. I felt it as soon as I arrived on the island. For me, a major part of this enthusiasm radiates from my fast-walking, subway-chasing, black-wearing, taxi-flagging urbanite daughters, The Piglet and Decibel.

The New York I know is viewed through their eyes and it is a very youthful place. I have to say I'm a bit flattered that my girls felt they could drag this old T-Rex around everywhere they went. But, apparently, this dinosaur...  CONTINUE READING >>

In this strange land of strange animals, none is more iconic than the Galápagos Giant Tortoise.
Growing to over six feet long and eight hundred pounds, these are the biggest tortoises on the planet and one of the largest reptiles.

No Galápagos visit would be complete without these mammoth reptiles and the amazing Breeding Center that is giving these magnificent creatures new

Boomerang Brats

The author of "The Benefits Of Being A Boomerang Kid" lists three reasons that full grown adults should continue to force their parents to support them and, consequently, avoid contributing to the economy and society at large.

On the top of his list, spending Mom and Pop's money instead of his own.

"Saving Up- With no rent or utilities, you can build up your nest egg as long as you're disciplined."

Gee that's right Kid, no worries. Has it occurred to you that while you're "building up your nest egg" that you're depleting your parents'... CONTINUE READING >>

Getting Key-ed Up in Florida

One of the greatest drives in America has to be the trip down U.S. Highway 1 through the Florida Keys.

We made a stop at the incredible Coral Castle, ate enormous amounts of seafood at the Marathon Seafood Fest and, when we ran out of road, landed in Key West... CONTINUE READING >>

To Dylan or Not to Dylan?

What are the chances? Driving along and there you see a big sign flashing "Bob Dylan in concert." Since I have never seen him and I might not get another chance, I thought I'd be an idiot not to grab this opportunity. He is, after all, truly a living legend.

Veronica wasn't overly thrilled since she had seen him several times before (her dad is the quintessential old hippy making the annual Dylan pilgrimage). I tried to think of some provocative ways to sell her on the idea of spending a hundred bucks and a couple hours of her life listening to unintelligible... CONTINUE READING  >>

9 Things We Told Our Girls in the Event of the Manhattan Hurricane

We have two daughters planning to ride out Hurricane Irene on Manhattan. Having lived in the Caribbean, here is the advice we gave them. Please share this with loved ones as being over prepared can make you feel stupid, it can also save your life.

1. Fill up your bathtub with water. Water supplies get contaminated with flooding. You will want to bathe and cook. If you don't have a bathtub, buckets, pots & pans work as well.

2. Buy food. I called it "The Week of Living Amishly." Canned food, canned food, canned food.

3. It's gross, but your toilet will only... CONTINUE READING >>

Woodstock Turns the Big 4-0

Woodstock. The name instantly brings to mind a whole era to any of us who were old enough to listen to music when the concert happened. I didn't go to Woodstock, I saw the movie -- at a drive-in, no less – with my brother pretending to be my uncle / guardian because it was rated R for showing muddy hippy-chick boobs... oh, and maybe that part where Country Joe led the crowd in a chant. I may have been too young to get into an R movie forty years ago but I was old enough to know something big... read more

Kalamazoo Appy Crawl

From GypsyNester.com

As the tee shirts say, “Yes, There Really IS a Kalamazoo!” It’s the kind of name that makes you want to stop and see what’s going on. Kalamazoo is an Algonquian Indian word meaning “boiling pot” and the city has gained fame through celery, taxi cab production, Gibson guitars, the Upjohn “friable pill” and the Kalamazoo stove. With all of this going for it, we had to drop by and try an appy crawl in this tidy little Michigan college town, proving that appy crawls can be done in anyone’s hometown.

All roads led downtown, which boasts the first pedestrian mall in the United States. Since 1959 it has hosted fun little...read more
